Rose’s Will, a Stunning Debut, Wonderfully Crafted and Fabulous Fiction

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

“AFTER FORTY-EIGHT YEARS of being my mother’s daughter, I could count on two things: She was always right, and she was never wrong. I, on the other hand, was wrong from the moment of conception.”

Does this sound familiar to any of you? Can you relate to that as a daughter, or as a mother? I surely can. As I plunged further and further into this fabulously honest, sharp-witted and exceedingly well-written debut from Denise DeSio, I found myself more and more intrigued and utterly absorbed by this difficult mother-daughter relationship, feeling their pain, their disappointment, their heartaches, and a mixture of many other intense emotions.

“I’m still your mother: The words, like baking chocolate, enticing yet unpalatable, were powerful enough to unearth an intentionally buried demon – the weak, misguided creature that still yearned for her to be my mother.”

I finished reading Rose’s Will over a month ago, but the strong, raw emotions in this complicated, heart-wrenching family drama set in Brooklyn, N.Y. has left a lasting impression on me. The characters have stayed, and their stories still fresh in my mind.

As a fiction writer myself, I LOVE the way the plot is played out, from the different voices to wonderfully crafted characters, each telling the story in a distinctive style. Because of the different points of view, the characters come alive as multi-dimensional and fully fledged. With DeSio’s expert approach, I immersed myself in the whole process of reading – laughing with some of the colourful characters, or crying with them.

Book Advert Designed by Eri Nelson

Like all my other book reviews, I do not give away plots which would spoil the fun of reading it yourself. However, I hope that I have given you enough tantalising insight into this touching family drama that you would be persuaded to get a copy and dive right in.

If I fell in love with this book on first reading, perhaps you will too :) Happy Reading!

Junying, your book review are always enticing but with Denise’s book you didn’t have to do too much! Rose’s Will sounds like the perfect book for a thinking person to enjoy! Conflict and love– kind of like water and life!

You’re spot on, Dannie. Conflict and love do co-exist in our lives, making it dramatic and interesting, and sometimes it can be too hot to handle. Denise tackled a great theme and did it beautifully!
