Music Monday – Pearl’s Top Pick is …. Ricky Martin

November has been my cool Korean month when not only did I visit that fabulous country, but also devoted several blogs on her sights, tastes and sounds, December is the month I visit another beautiful country, and this time it is much closer and a tad hotter too, only a short hop away in Southern Spain. Yes, before you ask, I am actually there right now, just off the plane at Malaga :)

I’d like to begin the week with a music treat for all my friends and visitors from far and wide. From today and in the next few weeks, I will be presenting some amazing Spanish music to brighten up your days and delight your senses.

Do you know that Pearl Zhang, the protagonist in my trilogy, is a music lover? If you have read any of my Journey to the West books, you’ll probably know what I am talking about ;).  Anyway, today’s music choices are certainly that of Pearl’s.

During one of her several visits to China to see her family and friends, she came across Ricky Martin and bought her first CD by this super hot, Latin heart-throb – he became a huge hit in Asia following his electric performance of the  “La Copa de la Vida” at the World Cup Final in 1998.

Pearl’s First Ricky Martin CD Cover

There was a time when Pearl would listen to Ricky Martin on a daily basis, and she loved many of his songs, not just those he sang in English. Did it help that he was extremely handsome? Yes, it did, even after he came out as gay. Pearl had fallen in love with Ricky Martin and his music, once and for all eternity :)

It is a difficult task to pick her favourites out of hundreds of songs by this amazing artist, but with my help, here are a few of Pearl’s top Ricky Martin’s beautiful lyrics and melodies, from his earlier albums.

Ricky Martin – Casi Un Bolero (Almost A Bolero)

Isn’t it simply stunning? It goes straight to your heart, doesn’t it?! Pearl could not have enough of this love song, so please check out the English version and the beautiful lyrics too :)

Almost A Love Song – English Version for Casi Un Bolero

Lyrics

In this empty house there’s an echo

Of your laughter haunting me
Is it your voice in my memory
Or the wind being cruel and taunting me
Loneliness is my only friend
Faithful and constant to the end
When I look back at happiness
I will remember you
We were almost a love song, hey

I wish that I could bring you back to me
You’re my missing melody
I wish my words could move your heart
To see that you belong here next to me
As the wind keeps gently sighing
With every breath your name I’m crying

In my empty life there’s no music
And the silence won’t let me go
Only the wind to remind me
That I need you more than I’d ever know
It looks like a ghost town in my mind
Where we are dancing out of time
I feel like a poet out of rhymes
Looking for one last word
We were almost a love song, hey

I wish that I could bring you back to me
You’re my missing melody
I wish my words could move your heart to see
That you belong here next to me
As the wind keeps gently sighing
With every breath your name I’m crying

Here I am all alone
Almost a love song
You’re the love of my life
Oh my love, oh my love
You’re the reason that I live
Almost a love song
Oh my love, oh my love
Almost a love song
In my heart

As the wind keeps gently sighing
With every breath your name I’m crying

Try another of Pearl’s pick below :)

Ricky Martin- Te Extraño, Te Olvido, Te Amor

I must admit that Ricky Martin is one reason why I want to learn Spanish, and it is my intention that I shall master it enough to understand some of the wonderful lyrics. Finally I’m devoting the final selection of today’s video clips to a very dear friend of mine, my hostess in Spain and my Spanish teacher – Ricky Martin has a special song especially for her, so I’ll borrow that from him, To Maria.

Ricky Martin – María

For the hardcore Martin fans, the video below is over 4 hours long, and you can listen to him to your heart’s content. Enjoy!

Thank you for visiting – please come back soon, and see what other treats I have for you :)
